Frequently Asked Questions

Research-backed answers to common eSIM questions

Basics

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card permanently embedded in your device. You download a carrier profile by scanning a QR code. The process takes under 5 minutes and can be done before you travel.

Is eSIM better than a local SIM?

For most travelers, yes. eSIM lets you prepare before departure, covers 30+ countries with one plan, and eliminates the need to find a phone shop at each destination.

Does my phone need to be unlocked?

Yes. Contact your carrier to unlock your device. Most carriers do this free of charge.

Plans & Data

How much data do I need?

Tourist (maps, messaging): 5–10GB for 2 weeks. Remote worker: 20–30GB/month. Heavy user: 40GB+. Always choose more than you think you need.

Can I use eSIM as a hotspot?

Most plans support hotspot/tethering. Some restrict it or count it separately. Check the plan's terms before purchasing.

Can I keep my home number?

Yes. Use Dual SIM: home physical SIM for calls/texts, travel eSIM for data. Configure in Settings → Cellular.

Troubleshooting

No signal in a new country

Toggle Airplane Mode on/off. If still no signal, manually select a network in Settings → Cellular → Network Selection.

Profile disappeared after update

Check Settings → Cellular — the profile is likely deactivated. Re-enable it. If gone, contact your provider for a new QR code.
