Section 1

eSIM Technology Overview

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card permanently integrated into a device's circuit board. The physical chip — the eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) — is soldered to the motherboard during manufacturing. What distinguishes it from traditional SIM technology is that its carrier profile is stored digitally and can be changed remotely via GSMA's SGP.22 standard.

When you purchase an eSIM plan, the provider generates a QR code pointing to their SM-DP+ server. Scanning this QR code initiates a secure download of an encrypted carrier profile. The profile is bound to your specific device hardware — it cannot be copied or transferred.

The eUICC chip can store multiple profiles (typically 5–20 depending on the device), though only one or two can be active simultaneously. This enables Dual SIM functionality — running a home SIM and travel eSIM simultaneously.

Key insight: A regional European eSIM plan covers 30+ countries. Your device automatically selects the best available network as you cross each border — no manual intervention required.

Activation Process

Activation is consistent across platforms. Requires Wi-Fi and takes 1–5 minutes.

iPhone (iOS 12.1+)

  1. Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
  2. Scan QR code
  3. Tap Continue, wait 1–3 min
  4. Label the plan
  5. Configure Dual SIM

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings → Connections → SIM manager
  2. Add mobile plan
  3. Scan QR code
  4. Follow prompts
  5. Set data SIM preference
Critical: Never delete an eSIM profile without a replacement QR code. Once deleted, the original QR is invalidated.

Plan Selection Criteria

FactorEvaluation Criteria
CoverageVerify all destinations are included; "European" plans vary from 20–50+ countries
Data volumeTourist: 5–10GB · Remote worker: 20–30GB · Heavy: 40GB+
ValidityWhen does the clock start? Purchase, install, or first use?
HotspotCheck fair use policy for tethering restrictions
Network tierTier 1 roaming partners provide better speeds

Dual SIM Configuration

Dual SIM is the optimal setup for international travelers. Use your home physical SIM for calls and texts (keeping your number reachable) while the travel eSIM handles data at local rates.

Configure in Settings → Cellular: set travel eSIM as default data SIM, home SIM as default for voice calls. Incoming calls ring on your home number; data routes through the cheaper plan.

eSIM in Europe

Europe is among the best regions globally for eSIM use. All EU member states have strong 4G coverage, with 5G expanding rapidly in major cities. EU roaming regulations ensure fair data rates across member states.

Regional plans cover 30–50 countries, with automatic network switching at each border. Switzerland, Norway, and the UK are not EU members — verify your plan covers these if visiting.
