Fundamentals

What is eSIM technology?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable SIM card permanently integrated into a device's hardware. The GSMA standardized eSIM technology in 2016 via the SGP.22 specification, enabling remote SIM provisioning — the ability to download and manage carrier profiles without physical card swapping.

For travelers, this means purchasing a regional European plan online and downloading it via QR code before departure. A single plan can cover 30+ countries, with automatic network selection at each border crossing.

The eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) chip stores multiple profiles simultaneously, enabling Dual SIM functionality — using a home SIM for calls while the travel eSIM handles data.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your device. You download a carrier profile by scanning a QR code — no physical SIM card needed. The process takes under 5 minutes and can be done before you travel.

Can I keep my home number?

Yes. Dual SIM lets you use your home physical SIM for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data. Configure in Settings → Cellular.

Does my phone need to be unlocked?

Yes. Contact your carrier to unlock your device. Most carriers do this free of charge.
